Crimestoppers
of the Midlands
(A N O N Y M O U S)
ANOTHER TOOL TO AID LAW ENFORCEMENT IN THE
FIGHT AGAINST CRIME
COLUMBIA, S.C. –
Crimestoppers is a private, non-profit
organization started in the Midlands in 1982 to
combat crime in the area. To date, information
received through the organization has solved
4,389 cases and helped law enforcement officials
recover property and seize narcotics totaling
$14,173,787.
The primary function of crimestoppers is to
provide an outlet through which anonymous
callers can provide information about unsolved
crimes. Callers who telephone the 24-hour
hotline are immediately given a code number. If
their tip results in an arrest, the caller is
eligible for a reward up to $1,000. The
crimestoppers board of directors meets monthly
to determine who should receive rewards and how
much money each reward will represent. Banks
then cooperate with the organization by paying
rewards to those people who correctly identify
themselves with their individual crimestoppers
code number.
There are many reasons a person might call the
crimestoppers hotline. They may have witnessed
a crime or overheard someone talking about one.
Crimestoppers has partnered with WLTX-19 to
produce weekly crimestoppers segments, which
currently air every day on the 6 p.m. and 11
p.m. news.
This nonprofit organization prides itself on the
fact that 97% of all operating
funds (which come entirely from donations) go
directly to paying tipsters.
The
organization is entirely volunteer-based with a
board of directors and currently collaborates
with the 26 local state and federal agencies in
the midlands some of which are: Airport Police,
Alcohol Tobacco & Firearms, Cayce Department of
Public Safety, Columbia College Police
Department, Columbia Police Department, Eastover

Investigations, Forest Acres Police Department,
